Brains starts Parkinson’s clinic for specialised care
Every Friday starting April 21, specialists at the Brains Neuro and Spine Centre will hold an exclusive clinic for Parkinson’s patients at its centre in Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore. The emphasis of this novel initiative is to ensure that the patients and their caregivers get as much time as they need with their doctors.
Explaining the need for such a clinic at the Parkinson’s day event held at the Brains Centre on April 10, senior neurologist at Brains, Dr Vardarajulu emphasised that “for effective management of Parkinson’s patients, detailed consultations are of vital importance. Doctors must have time to give a patient hearing to patients and their caregivers without any time pressure and ask all the right questions to get a clear idea about their condition.”
Every little detail, tiny crumbs of information, collected from patients and their caregivers could prove crucial in determining the right course of treatment. “Parkinson’s is a very tricky disorder,” he said. “It behaves and responds to medication differently in each patient.” And, therefore. the "one-size-fits-all approach simply does not work. Personalized medicine is what we are moving towards in step with the best in the world."
A dedicated clinic is a move towards creating an environment customized for the disease. Following consultation with doctors the patients and their caregivers would be referred to Ms Radha Ramaswamy, the driving force behind the Basal Ganglia Support Group at the Brains Centre, for counselling oriented to improving the quality of life of the patients.
