Breakthrough in treating neurodegenerative diseases

The future for patients of Alzheimer’s and other similar diseases has until recently been hopelessly bleak. But a new class of drugs promises to dispel the sense of despair surrounding these neurodegenerative diseases that inexorably strip patents of their memories, personalities and ability to move and speak before finally killing them. The drugs showed their promise in two separate landmark trials, involving Huntington’s disease and Spinal Muscular Atrophy, both thus far unstoppable neuro disorders. In the trials the new medicines were effective in correcting the genetic defect that causes Huntington’s. The same class of drugs has shown that it can be effective in helping babies stricken with Spinal Muscular Atrophy regain their mobility.
